ATTRACTIONS

El Conde (pedestrian shopping street) - 0.5 miles Colonial Zone (historical zone) - 1 mile Catedral Basílica Menor de Santa Maria (New World's first cathedral) - 1 mile La Atarazana (shopping, dining in 16th century warehouses) - 1.5 miles El Alcázar de Colón (residence of Columbus' son, Diego) - 1.5 miles Columbus Lighthouse (Columbus' monumental grave) - 3 miles Las Américas International José Francisco Peña Gómez Airport (SDQ): Approximate driving time is 35 minutes and distance is 18 miles (30 km.) Driving directions from Las Américas International José Francisco Peña Gómez Airport: Take Las Américas International Hwy towards Santo Domingo. Cross the floating bridge and turn left onto Av George Washington (also called Malecon) and the hotel is on the right. Getting there: The best way is by beige-colored tourist taxis which charge flat fares in the $26–$35 range. Rental cars and limousines are more than $36. Fees subject to change without notice. Rental cars are available online. Getting around: This hotel is in a business and tourist area with plenty of shopping, dining, and entertainment choices in the immediate area. But to go farther, taxis are best. Taking one from the hotel is probably safest and fare should be understood before the ride begins. Other ways to travel are by motorcycle taxis called motoconchos which cruise in the downtown area for less than $5 a ride. Públicos are cars that operate like small buses, picking up and dropping off where necessary for fares of less than $5. Fees subject to change without notice.

Quisqueya - This casual restaurant offers breakfast and lunch buffets as well as à la carte choices and à la carte dinners. Adjacent is a coffee-and-pastry bar. Champions - Gleaming wood, brass, and tributes to Dominican baseball players identify this spot as a classic sports bar, with televisions everywhere and a burgers-and-nachos menu. Evenings, disco music draws patrons to the bar's dance floor. Bacardi del Sol Bar & Grill - This open-air place serves grilled burgers, salads, light lunches, and background music to poolsiders. Cascada Bar - This shaded terrace flanked by pools and waterfall gardens is the spot for tropical drinks and meals from Quisqueya's menu. Room service is available 24 hours.

AMENITIES & SERVICES
|
|
What to expect: Built in 1956 by dictator Raphael Trujillo for the Dominican elite, closed after his assassination in 1961, and expanded with the addition of a 10-story tower before reopening in 1989, the Jaragua remains the place for Dominicans to stage weddings and other social rituals even while it now caters to international business travelers, vacationers, and after-dark revelers. Amenity highlights: Set above a lawn sloping toward the Caribbean, a sundeck by the large pool provides sweeping sea views. The casino (by square footage, the largest in the Caribbean) and sports book (American/Canadian sports) draw from all over the city. The casino's dance bar caters to adults, with a separate disco serving youths. A 20-minute walk away, the Colonial Zone--the Old World's first city in the New World--offers memorable sightseeing and dining. Insider tip: As an alternative to a jarring wake-up call, guests can choose a soft knock on the door and delivery of eye-opening coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and a newspaper.

The 300-room hotel offers destination-resort facilities such as a health spa with men's and women's saunas, steam rooms, hot and cold spas, plush "quiet rooms," and a fitness center--all complimentary except for massage and body and facial treatments. Next to the casino, a theater stages shows and revues several times a month. For commercial travelers, a full-service business center includes translation services and cellular-phone rentals. Running along the city's central, miles-long waterfront against which the Caribbean rolls majestically, the malécon across the street offers breezy daylight and romantic after-dark strolls.
